Excel Sport and Leadership
Australind Senior High School’s EXCEL Sports and Leadership Program empowers aspiring athletes to build confidence, resilience and leadership skills while developing their sporting performance in a supportive learning environment.
The program is designed for students who demonstrate a strong commitment to sport and the potential to grow as leaders. Many students involved in the program participate in club or representative sport and are motivated to further develop their athletic ability, teamwork and leadership.
Through a combination of practical training and theory-based learning, students develop the skills, discipline and mindset needed to succeed both in sport and in their wider learning.
EXCEL encourages students to challenge themselves, represent their school with pride and contribute positively to the school community.
Program Overview
Students in the EXCEL program participate in learning experiences that include:
- Practical sport and physical conditioning
- Sports science and performance development
- Coaching and officiating skills
- Leadership development and teamwork
- Event organisation and participation in school carnivals
- Opportunities to support younger students and school sporting events
Through these experiences, students develop confidence, responsibility and teamwork skills that benefit them both on and off the field.
What We Look for in EXCEL Students
Entry into the EXCEL program is competitive. Students are selected based on a range of factors including sporting ability, behaviour, work ethic, leadership potential and engagement in physical education.
While sporting ability is important, we are also looking for students who demonstrate:
- A positive attitude and willingness to work hard
- Strong teamwork and leadership potential
- Commitment to representing their school
- Respectful behaviour and engagement in learning
- Students in the program are expected to maintain high standards across all areas of school life.
To remain in the program, students demonstrate:
- Effort, a positive attitude and enthusiasm in all activities
- Organisation and leadership in all classes
- High behaviour standards across all subjects
- Representation or trial for interschool carnivals and events
- Assistance at school carnivals as an umpire or coach
- At least 85% attendance
How to Apply
2027 Year 7 Students
The EXCEL Sports and Leadership Program is available to students who live within Australind Senior High School’s local intake area. If you are unsure whether your address is included, please check the intake area map.
Nominations for the 2027 intake closed on 1 May 2026.
To be considered for the program, two steps must be completed:
1. Primary School Nomination
- Students are nominated by their Primary School Physical Education teacher.
- Teachers provide professional insight into a student’s sporting ability, leadership potential, effort and engagement in physical education.
- Nominations are submitted directly to Australind Senior High School by the primary school teacher.
2. Submit an Enrolment Form
- Parents or carers were required to submit a completed Australind Senior High School enrolment form directly to the school. This form is available on the school’s Enrolments webpage.
- Both the teacher nomination and enrolment form needed to be received for a student to be eligible to progress through the EXCEL selection process.
Selection Process
Once nominations have been received:
- The EXCEL Coordinator conducts observations of nominated students during primary school PE lessons in Term 2.
- Selected students are invited to attend a trial session in early Term 3 at the Leschenault Leisure Centre.
Successful and unsuccessful applicants are notified in writing shortly after the trial. Students who are not offered a place in the EXCEL program are still welcomed at Australind Senior High School, where all students enjoy a wide range of Physical Education activities and sporting opportunities.
Students who are offered a place may also be invited to participate in the EXCEL Year 6 Extension Program, held at Australind Senior High School later in the year.
Current Australind SHS Students (Years 7–10)
Current Australind Senior High School students may apply to join the EXCEL program by speaking with their Health and Physical Education teacher.
Entry at these year levels depends on program availability, teacher observations and a student’s demonstrated commitment to sport, effort and leadership potential.
